Summer Veggies Rolled Into One

June 16th, 2008 · No Comments · Farmers Market, Recipe

So my big summer news is that I joined a CSA. What is a CSA? It’s community supported agriculture. Buying a share gives me a weekly supply of fruits and vegetables through October. That’s a giant amount of produce.
My only responsibility is picking it up each Thursday in Glover Park, but as somebody who can’t [...]

Sometimes L.A. is Better

June 11th, 2008 · No Comments · Los Angeles, Travel

I’m mostly glad to live in a city with monuments and seasons and Gluten-Freebird brownies (Thanks Buzz!), but I have to admit that sometimes L.A. is better.
I just got back from a visit that included a bunless Dodger Dog and plenty of sun. I’m still full.
The scenery is overwhelming. Take the Santa Monica Farmers Market, [...]

Top Tastes: Week of June 3

June 9th, 2008 · No Comments · Elsewhere, Restaurants, Top Eats, Washington, D.C.

First, huge congrats to Eric Ziebold of Freebird favorite CityZen for his James Beard Award.
I am out in L.A. burning some color into my pale complexion and scoping the gluten-free scene. Surprisingly, the celiac awareness hasn’t hit a lot of L.A. yet.

Why? It’s adjacent to the La [...]

The Sun’ll Come Out, Tamari

June 6th, 2008 · 3 Comments · Nibbles

(Disclaimer: It’s still dark in L.A. and I have terrible jetlag, so pardon the title.)
One key to adapting to celiac is finding products to simulate a normal diet. Gluten has surprised me in a few forms, but the most devastating has been soy sauce. Must this take away all Chinese and Japanese food? But I’ve [...]

Farewell, Meridian

June 4th, 2008 · No Comments · Restaurants, Washington, D.C.

I received an email this morning announcing that Meridian, the newest face in Brightwood Park, closed up last night. I hate to see restaurants close, especially one in an underrepresented neighborhood. The restaurant had soul and a unique vibe, but it also had problems from the start.
Now that it’s gone, I’d like to use it [...]

Dispatch from Charlottesville (Part 2)

June 2nd, 2008 · 2 Comments · Elsewhere, Restaurants, Uncategorized

Travel back with me to Charlottesville where all eating seems to be much more mindful.
In this installment, we visit Revolutionary Soup. This tiny underground spot serving……soup in all flavors and textures. In true C’ville fashion, the spot features ingredients sourced from local farms (Polyface chicken sound good to anybody else out there?). When you order [...]
