Cool Chix

October 3rd, 2008 · No Comments · Restaurants, Washington, D.C.

Sorry I’ve been out of touch. I’ve been in debate camp.
How fun does that sound? You can send me to a podium by the river any day.
But if I’m going somewhere, I’d best have a lunch at the ready.
Finding on-the-go options has been really tricky since I started my gluten-free diet. Sandwiches and falafels and [...]

Ooey Gooey Pie: Pizza from Lilit Cafe

August 18th, 2008 · No Comments · Pizza, Restaurants, Smackdowns, Uncategorized, Washington, D.C.

I’ve been curious about Lilit CafĂ© for quite a while. The Bethesda restaurant functions as a deli, pizzeria, gelateria and beer/wine store. They also very prominently feature a gluten-free menu.
The menu isn’t anything extremely complex, but that’s what I was hoping for. They serve gluten-free crab cakes, grilled cheese, deli sandwiches, and pizza.
The gluten awareness [...]

Stay or Go: D.C. Restaurant Week 2008

August 10th, 2008 · 4 Comments · Restaurants, Uncategorized, Washington, D.C.

Restaurant Week is back. In years past, it was a week of $20-something lunches with $30-something dinners. Nowadays, the week is often 2 weeks or even a month and that dinner has become $35.08 rather than the expected $30.08. I’ve gone to more than my fair share of restaurant week meals (it was a part [...]

You Complete Me: A Service Epiphany at Al Crostino

August 6th, 2008 · No Comments · Restaurants, Washington, D.C.

When our farmers market okra died a bit sooner than anticipated (RIP, little green friends), we made an impromptu visit to Al Crostino for dinner last night.
Gluteneer and I loved that place when it first opened. We could order a few apps and split the arugula-topped ribeye. So, we decided to hit it up [...]

Gluten-Free Chinese (or How I Came to Eat at P.F. Chang’s)

July 9th, 2008 · 3 Comments · Elsewhere, Restaurants, Washington, D.C.

Chinese food is something that I’ve really come to miss.
In my gluten-full life, we practically had a standing order at Great Wall Szechuan House for Ma La Chicken, Ma Po Tofu and Double-Cooked Pork (usually with a side of veggie dumplings).
The craving hasn’t been intense enough to warrant a trip to P.F. Chang’s for their [...]

Burger Madness

July 2nd, 2008 · No Comments · Los Angeles, Restaurants, Top Eats, Washington, D.C.

It’s been a busy few weeks for me, partly because I’ve been eating a lot.
Most notably, I stopped into opening day at Ray’s Hell-Burger yesterday, which is just down from Ray’s the Steaks on Wilson Blvd.
I almost don’t want to share it. It was that good.
The burgers are indescribably juicy and flavorful. 10 ounces [...]

Service Call: Trials in Gluten-Free Dining

June 25th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Restaurants, Uncategorized, Washington, D.C.

I’ve only been navigating the gluten-free life for three months, but it feels like forever. That said, last night was a totally new experience in gluten-free dining.
In the lounge of one of Washington’s best, most highly rated restaurants, I ran into my first case of celiac insensitivity ( I call it Burgergate).
I asked if I [...]
